Australian Citizenship by Conferral

Permanent

Who it's for: Permanent residents who meet the residence, character, English and knowledge of Australia requirements.

Generally requires 4 years lawful residence in Australia (including the last 12 months as a permanent resident), passing the citizenship test, and attending a citizenship ceremony to make the Pledge of Commitment.

Resident Return visa

Subclass 155
Up to 5 years

Who it's for: Australian permanent residents (or former PR/citizens who lost that status) who need to travel.

Restores or extends the 5-year travel facility on a permanent visa. Generally requires 2 years of presence in Australia in the last 5 years.

Resident Return visa

Subclass 157
3 months

Who it's for: Permanent residents who do not meet the residence requirements for a 155 but have compelling reasons for absence.

A short-term travel facility for PR holders who cannot meet the standard residence requirements.

Bridging visas

Subclass BVA / BVB / BVC / BVE

Who it's for: Non-citizens with a substantive visa application or matter being decided.

Bridging visas keep you lawfully in Australia between visas. BVA: granted automatically with onshore applications. BVB: lets you travel and return. BVC: where no substantive visa held. BVE: for people negotiating departure or awaiting review.
